Our 5 Franklin County Fair Favorites

The 100th Annual Franklin County Fair kicks off this Saturday in Hilliard, bringing a week of farm animals, fried food, and family fun to the area. With so much to see at this favorite tradition, we decided to share our absolute favorite things about the Fair. Here’s a sample of what the event has in store.

1. The Food
What would a trip to the Fair be without filling up on junk food!? Hungry guests can spoil their diets and indulge at this event with endless goodies like lemon shake-ups, candy apples, cotton candy, funnel cake, and a bit of fried everything. Foodies can also check out various Fair events like judged cooking & baking competitions (Dutch Oven, sweets, pizza, meat, etc.), the 5th Annual Pie Eating Contest, a 4-H Pork Dinner, and more. Come on an empty stomach!

2. The Demolition Derby & Grandstand Events
Roaring engines, smoke & fire, and the incredible thrill of watching a bunch of junker cars bash each other to bits! The Fair’s annual conclusion, the Smash It Demolition Derby is by far the most action-packed attraction of the Fair, every year filling the Grandstand shoulder-to-shoulder with cheering onlookers to watch the display of destruction. In addition to the Derby, the Grandstand will also host events like KOI Drag Races, Tractor Pulls, Outhouse Races, a Rodeo, and more throughout the week to keep the action going.

3. The Animals
Animal lovers will have plenty of furry friends to meet while exploring the fairgrounds. In addition to a Petting Zoo, the fair includes several livestock barns hosting goats, sheep, horses, cows, and other farm-friendly critters to see and touch. Many of these animals are judged and rewarded, and some will eventually be auctioned off in fair Livestock Sales, which are quite a spectacle in themselves.

4. The Midway
Our fair-going philosophy is that you’re never too old for carnival rides, and the Franklin County Fair’s Midway has just enough for every thrill threshold. Test your stomach on breakneck spinning rides, take a turn on the merry-go-round, or get a bird’s-eye view from the Ferris wheel, we just recommend you do it before stuffing your face with fair food! The Midway will also include a stage with entertainment & live music and a circus tent with daily shows.
5. The People-Watching
This one is pretty self-explanatory. The Fair draws a plethora of colorful characters from all walks of life. Sit back and take it all in.
