Jaylaunna Strickland is a dual-force professional making waves in two very different worlds—healthcare and photography. Her journey behind the lens began with a simple desire to capture photos of her son playing sports. That spark turned into a full-fledged passion and purpose. Volunteering at local events led to a breakthrough moment: becoming the personal photographer for a well-known DJ. From there, Jaylaunna’s path unfolded with intention—landing opportunities to shoot for players in the NFL, including several from the Cleveland Browns.

What began as a passion project evolved into a professional milestone when she became the first woman and first person of color on the Browns’ photography team. Now entering her fourth season, Jaylaunna’s work not only appears on the team’s official platforms, it also inspires a new generation of creatives. For her, representation isn’t just powerful, it’s personal.

Outside the stadium lights, Jaylaunna builds careers in another way. With a background in compliance and quality control, she transitioned into healthcare recruiting four years ago (hand-selected by her company’s CEO for the role). Since then, she’s been an innovator, advocate, and leader who blends people-first values with deep professional purpose.

What gets you up in the morning? And what gets you through the workweek?
Gratitude. Every day, I wake up thankful for the ability to do what I love—and the fact that I’m able to work, when so many others can’t, is never lost on me. I’m motivated by the impact I get to make, whether it’s through helping someone take the next step in their career or capturing a moment that means the world to someone. I lead with empathy and compassion, and I’m proud that kindness is at the center of everything I do. Knowing I have the opportunity to make someone’s life just a little better keeps me going through the week.

What advice or mentors have helped guide you along the way?
One of the most impactful pieces of advice I’ve received is to be exactly who I am, without conforming, but instead, inspiring. That mindset has shaped how I navigate both of my careers. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who not only believed in my potential but encouraged me to lead with authenticity. Their guidance taught me that staying true to myself opens doors not just for me, but for others who need to see what’s possible.

What do you do or where do you go to unwind?
I’m definitely a nature girl—I love to hike, ground myself outdoors, and just take in the peace that comes with being outside. I’m also really into fitness, and trying new workouts keeps me both energized and centered. The short answer? The gym is my go-to space to reset, refocus, and recharge.

What are a few of your favorite local spots in Columbus?
I love exploring Columbus! A few of my favorite spots are Upper Cup Coffee and the Overlook Trail—it’s the perfect blend of city and nature. I also enjoy discovering new coffee shops around town and spending time at One Church, which has been a meaningful part of my community.

When you were a kid, what did you say you wanted to be when you grew up?
When I was a kid, I said I wanted to own a bus so I could pick up all the homeless people and take care of them. Even at a young age, I had a heart for helping others, and that desire to make a difference has stayed with me ever since.

What books or podcasts are you reading/listening to right now?
I’m currently reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Future of Work, First, Break All the Rules, and Finding Your True North. Each one offers powerful insight into leadership, purpose, and growth, both personally and professionally. As for podcasts, I enjoy The Founders Podcast for its deep dives into entrepreneurial journeys and On Purpose with Jay Shetty for its meaningful conversations around mindfulness and intentional living.

What does it mean to you to be chosen for the Next Up Columbus award?
Words can’t fully explain how much this means to me—I’m still in disbelief. To be chosen for the Next Up Columbus award is a reminder that the kindness I try to pour into others was seen and felt. It means that someone recognized the impact I’ve been trying to make, and for that, I’m deeply grateful.

If someone were to ask you what the “pulse” of Columbus is, what would you tell them?
The pulse of Columbus is its people. It’s a true representation of the world—a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and energy. There’s a unique spirit here fueled by opportunity, diversity, and a constant drive to move forward. The city is always evolving, and its people are the heartbeat behind that momentum.
