Liz Martin is Improving Columbus with SOUP

“We invite local people and organizations with ideas that need funding that might not be able to get traditional methods of funding,” said Columbus SOUP Executive Director, Liz Martin.

Columbus SOUP is a relative new non-profit seeking to aid philanthropic ventures in out-of-the-box ways and Liz is leading the way. Through her experiences launching a new business, Jackpot Treats for Lucky Dogs, she began tapping into the small business community. That eventually led to the creation of Columbus SOUP. “[Starting a business] gave me the confidence and the knowledge that Columbus really embraces things like this,” she explained. It’s all about making Columbus a better place not just from a business angle, but for all residents and guests. “Everyone who attends has that little part in making a difference,” she continues. The ventures that seek funding are then given the opportunity to receive money and increased awareness for their cause. Martin constantly strives to shape the future of crowd-funded events that benefit philanthropic activity.

What would you say about your neighborhood? What makes it stand out for you?
Accessibility to the city is key for me. The best part about my neighborhood is that it is 15 minutes or less to get pretty much anywhere I want to go. I have quick access to the 670 and 670 bike trail, the airport, Bexley and Easton. What more could I need?

What other neighborhoods to you frequent and what would you say about them?
Downtown has been my go-to lately. It’s really developing an amazing energy that draws me there! 4th Street, Gay Street, the theaters, The Commons, The Scioto Mile, CoGo, Pearl Alley Market, and the great events going on during the Summer are a great reason to get downtown. Franklinton is becoming such a gem! I’ve loved the spirit there from the day I set foot in 400 West Rich two winters ago. It showcases how the government, businesses, organizations, and individuals are coming together to rebuild a community from the ground up. I cannot wait to experience Independents’ Day there this year! I love German Village for its historical charm and walkability. It has such a great variety of amazing restaurants, bakeries, shops, and bars and I find myself there all the time.

If you could have been the inventor of something, what would it be? Butter

What inspires you? My inspiration is this city and the people in it who are working hard and taking the initiative to make a real impact for positive change.

Pastimes: Hanging out with my boyfriend and our dogs, yoga, spinning, volunteering with Columbus Gives Back, Yelping, going on Columbus Food and Columbus Brew Adventures, having brunch parties, hosting Too Many Cooks at Wild Goose Creative, finding new amazing things to do in this limitless city.
