Interview by Derek Grosso

Lindsay Barrie has a pretty cool job; she helps couples plan honeymoons and destination weddings all over the world. After getting a Master of Arts in Italian at Ohio State in 2013, Lindsay considered whether or not to continue with the Ph.D. to pursue an academic career. She was lucky enough to travel significantly during her undergraduate & graduate years, so she decided to take a year off to see what the job market had in store. Bliss Honeymoons was one of the first jobs she applied to, and after four years, she’s still there and loving it! “It is a great local business, my boss is inspiring, funny, and supportive, and I love working with clients to create memories through travel,” she said. Lindsay was recently selected by the Columbus Young Professionals Club as Networker of the Month for October.

Name: Lindsay Barrie
Age: 28
Company and Job Title: Bliss Honeymoons, Travel Consultant
Neighborhood: Italian Village

Tell us about what you do at Bliss Honeymoons:
My job is amazing! I help couples plan honeymoons to exciting destinations all over the world. Of course, we offer all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico, but we also handle Asia, private islands, and customized, private tours of Europe. I also coordinate destination weddings for groups as small as 10 guests to as large at 100 guests. While most of our destinations weddings are in the Caribbean, we have also planned destination weddings in Italy, Costa Rica, and many other exciting destinations.

If you weren’t doing what you do now, where would you be?
I would be teaching Italian in America or English around the world.

What is a career goal of yours?
I love working with destination wedding groups and would like to expand my work with groups beyond destination weddings. For example, I could also work with businesses planning incentive trips or help organize family reunions.

Tell us about an upcoming initiative that you’re passionate about.
My boss and I have been working on a Private Island collection for those who have always dreamed of honeymooning or getting married on an island all to themselves. While we have already launched the collection, we will be doing the “hands-on research” next year to get to know these exclusive resorts in person!

Favorite Columbus Young Professionals event or activity:
Networking Events & Bar Crawls.

Another CYP Club member you should get to know:
Heather Atkins, who was featured here last month, has been a great contact that I made at a recent networking event. I think the work she does is important and appreciate her as a networker and person.

Favorite Place in Columbus:
Probably the Columbus Commons during their summer concert series, but the TBDBITL alumna in me would say the Shoe when the band does pre-game.

Which organizations are you involved with around the community?
I recently made the Ohio Roller Derby Team!  Not only is it an exciting team sport, it is quite involved around the community. Joining a sports team and getting more involved in the community have both been on my to-do list for a few years, so this has been perfect for me.

What is one thing that you think Columbus needs (or wish Columbus had)?
An official roller derby venue, preferably with a bar in it.

If someone were to ask you what the “pulse” of Columbus is, what would you tell them?
Everything local. Local music, breweries, restaurants, businesses, sports teams… the list is endless. The local scene drives Columbus.

I can help fellow young professionals by… planning your honeymoon, destination wedding, or other international travel! I am happy to simply give advice as well.

Young professionals can help me by… encouraging friends and family members to meet with a travel agent before booking important travel like a honeymoon or destination wedding.  It does not cost more to use a travel agent and we don’t bite.

When I’m not working I am… at a concert or playing roller derby.

If I won the lottery, I would… so the usual saving, donating, and investing, then the usual worldwide traveling!

If I could have a superpower, I would choose… teleportation. It would make traveling that much easier.
