Mike Hochron is a self-described do-gooder — someone whose career has been guided by a simple but powerful mission: to make life better for others. He began his professional journey serving individuals with developmental disabilities, laying a foundation rooted in compassion and service.

After several years working in the public sector with the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, Mike returned to nonprofit work in 2022. Today, he leads communications and advocacy for the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, the region’s largest anti-hunger organization. Whether in government or nonprofit leadership, Mike’s path has always centered on helping people live a good life and he’s grateful every day for the opportunity to do just that.

What gets you up in the morning? And what gets you through the workweek?
I’m driven by a desire to make a positive impact in our community. Every day, I’m driven by the knowledge that my work is helping to build a healthier, hunger-free community. It’s really easy to come to work when you know that it’s making a difference. Coffee helps, too.

What advice or mentors have helped guide you along the way?
A frequent saying in my family is that, “You never know what it’s good for.” It means things have a way of working out even if we can’t tell in the moment where it will lead. It’s advice that drives me to take things one day at a time and trust that doing the right thing will pay off in the long run.

What do you do or where do you go to unwind?
My reset button is going outdoors. Central Ohio has amazing an Metroparks system where you can get outside for a hike or some time in the woods.

What are a few of your favorite local spots in Columbus?
You can find me at local farmers markets most weekends, supporting our local food system and getting some tasty produce. I also love Columbus’s international food scene- our diversity makes this community stronger, and more delicious!

When you were a kid, what did you say you wanted to be when you grew up?
I never had a great answer to this question as a kid, I just knew that I wanted to help people. Through the twists and turns of life, I’ve learned there are many different ways to make a positive impact in the world.

What books or podcasts are you reading/listening to right now?
I’ve got a steady diet of NPR podcasts when time allows. Most books these days are during bedtime with my kiddo – we can tell you exactly what happens If You Give a Mouse A Cookie.

What does it mean to you to be chosen for the Next Up Columbus award?
The Columbus area is full of young, creative people making a difference and building a stronger future for our community. It’s an honor to be recognized for this award when there are so many impressive and diverse people doing great things.

If someone were to ask you what the “pulse” of Columbus is, what would you tell them?
The pulse of Columbus is absolutely its people! I moved here in 2013 and was immediately welcomed into the community and made to feel like I belonged here. That’s unique among all the places I’ve ever lived and it’s part of what makes Columbus special.
