Caylan Stevens has always believed in showing up for kids because, as her beloved aunt put it, “Kids don’t ask to be here.” That mantra has shaped her life’s work and unwavering dedication to youth. A proud alum of the University of Cincinnati and the University of Michigan, Caylan has turned her passion into purpose through her work at Communities In Schools of Ohio. Starting as a Site Coordinator at Norton, she spent six years championing students and navigating tough challenges with heart. Today, she continues to uplift others and create equitable opportunities for children across Columbus. She’s helping build the kind of city every kid deserves to grow up in.
What gets you up in the morning? And what gets you through the workweek?
I’m one of those people who genuinely love working, especially when the work matters. What drives me is knowing there’s a real need, and that I’m doing my part to meet it. I wake up with purpose because I believe in what I do, and I see the impact it has. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. This work is personal. It’s rooted in love, in purpose, and in the unwavering belief that every student deserves a champion. That belief keeps me grounded, focused, and committed—day in and day out. And shout out to my Nespresso machine.
What advice or mentors have helped guide you along the way?
I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people who have poured into me with wisdom, strength, and unwavering support through every chapter of my life. Their guidance has not only held me accountable but has also pushed me to consistently rise to the occasion and show up as the best version of myself. Their influence continues to shape who I am and how I lead.
What do you do or where do you go to unwind?
I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, whether that’s trying new restaurants or staying in. I also love going on walks in different neighborhoods! I also unwind by working part-time as an Event Assistant Associate with Sage Hill Event Rentals. I get to help decorate beautiful events and check out the most gorgeous venues throughout the city!
What are a few of your favorite local spots in Columbus?
I have so many favorites! One of my favorite things to do is explore local coffee shops and bookstores. It’s my weekly treat to myself, and I absolutely love it. Storyline Bookstore in Upper Arlington is one of my favorite spots. Parable Café is another go-to, and I’m a big fan of Hubbard Grille’s happy hour, too. However, nothing beats getting dressed up and wandering High Street!
When you were a kid, what did you say you wanted to be when you grew up?
At one point, I wanted to be a history teacher. Then, I dreamed of becoming a book editor because I loved to read. By the time I entered college, my focus shifted to becoming a prison social worker. Even though the titles changed, the heart of it stayed the same: I’ve always wanted to help people!
What books or podcasts are you reading/listening to right now?
I have been trying to get back into reading fiction, which has been so much fun. I’m currently reading “Harlem Rhapsody” by Victoria Christopher Murray. My favorite podcasts are True Crime Obsessed and American History Tellers.
What does it mean to you to be chosen for the Next Up Columbus award?
This is such a great honor! I genuinely love my city, and I care deeply about the direction we’re going in, the good and the bad! To be recognized for doing the work that I love, in a place I believe in, means everything to me. It reminds me that showing up, staying committed, and leading with heart really does matter.
If someone were to ask you what the “pulse” of Columbus is, what would you tell them?
There’s a deep, unmistakable pride that runs through this city, from the creative energy of Franklinton to the cultural richness of the East Side, to the strong sense of community in Gahanna and beyond. You feel it in the arts, in the neighborhoods, and especially in the people, whether they’ve lived here for generations or chose to call Columbus home. It’s in the way we show up for our sports teams, support local businesses, and support one another. This city is something special, and I’m happy more people are starting to recognize that!
