Columbus native Jesse Johnson developed a passion for vintage jewelry through his other passion—music.

“My family has a long history in the jewelry industry and when I was younger, I swore I’d never get into it. Instead, I pursued music,” said the Worthington Christian High School grad, who also earned a degree in political science from Ohio State University. “While playing and recording, I slowly fell in love with vintage guitars.”

At the same time, Johnson was interning at his parents’ jewelry store, the Diamond Cellar.

“I noticed clients had 70 years-worth of jewelry and watches that they didn’t know what to do with,” he said. “I asked if we could start buying it and refurbishing some of these really cool pieces. Soon we started an online store and have continued to grow it from there.”

Eventually, it led to Johnson founding his own jewelry company, STORE 5a.

“[It’s] Columbus’ largest buyer and seller of luxury jewelry, watches and designer handbags,” said the Clintonville resident, who lives in the eclectic neighborhood with his wife, Priscilla. “Our team authenticates and refurbishes each piece, bringing it to like-new condition.”

It makes every day at work a surprise.

“We never know what treasures are going to walk in our doors—it makes it a really exciting concept for both our clients and our team,” said Johnson. “On top of that, we get to work with incredible people every day. I love my job.”

He also loves that through his work, he gets a chance to give back.

“I am very fortunate that through my work we get to partner with fantastic organizations such as Make-A-Wish, A Kid Again, St. Jude’s Discover the Dream, and more.”

When he’s off the clock, Johnson enjoys grabbing a drink at the Denmark, saying, “they have incredible craft cocktails.”

He also recommends the Short North for guests and newbies.

“I always recommend heading there. It has great places for food, drinks and shopping!”
